In February 2016, Better Births set out the Five Year Forward View for NHS maternity services in England. Better Births recognised that delivering such a vision could only be delivered through locally led transformation, suitably supported at national and regional levels.
On 7 January 2019, the NHS long-term plan (formerly known as the 10-year plan) was published setting out key ambitions for the service over the next 10 years. There is a dedicated section detailing the ambitions for maternity and neonatal services .
The Maternity and Neonatal Safety Improvement Programme (formerly known as the Maternal and Neonatal Health Safety Collaborative) supports improvement in the quality and safety of maternity and neonatal units across England.
The National Neonatal Audit Programme 2019 Annual report on 2018 data was published in December 2019. It reports on key measures of the care provided to those babies in the 181 neonatal services in England, Wales, Scotland and the Isle of Man that take part in the audit.
Saving Lives, Improving Mothers’ Care , from the Maternal, Newborn and Infant Clinical Outcome Review Programme, delivered by MBRRACE-UK, details the lessons learned to inform maternity care from the UK and Ireland Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths and Morbidity 2015-17.
